The Valentine MilongaMonday, 5 January 2009 22:28:17 EST The Valentine's Day Milonga is a Kansas City Tradition!
The first Valentine's Day Tango Milonga was given in 2000 by Elizabeth O'Keefe, an early founder of Argentine tango in Kansas City. Elizabeth was the second dance teacher to teach Argentine tango in Kansas City. The first was Louis Bar, however Elizabeth was the first to have learned tango in Argentina. Louis Bar and Laura Cantu have gone on to win national and international prizes in tango competitions and bring those trophies home to Kansas City. Elizabeth brought us the Valentine Tango Milonga. This black-tie optional event is always the biggest tango event of the year for the city, and indeed for the region.
After Elizabeth left Kansas City for... well, it is hard to say exactly, but all evidence points to either Area51 or the Bermuda Triangle, although there may be a clue at tangotemptress.com, so someone else had to come to the rescue of the Valentine Tango Milonga if it was to survive. That someone was Toi Shaw who assumed the mantle of the Queen of the Valentine Milonga, and has sponsored the milonga for several years. Toi has taken the milonga to new heights, moving it to a larger space, bringing in Tango Lorca to play each year, as well as bringing in Fernanda y Guillermo for fabulous workshops and performances in association with the milonga. Toi has truly done Kansas City a great service!
